Stretch Marks
Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched beyond its capacity. Technically a form of scarring, characterised as indented streaking across the surface of the skin; common shapes and patterns of stretch marks lead to them being commonly referred to as ‘tiger stripes’. Usually, they are red or purple-hued when they first appear and fade to a silvery white over time. This can happen when a teenager has a growth spurt, a woman gets pregnant or in anyone who experiences fast and significant weight gain. These marks appear when fibres in the dermis (middle layer of the skin) break, allowing the blood vessels in the deeper layers of the skin to show through.
HOW CAN I PREVENT STRETCH MARKS?
•  It is difficult to prevent them altogether as our skin can only stretch to a particular point. But there are steps you can take to minimise it including:
•  Eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as protein-rich food
•  Keeping the skin hydrated from the inside (drinking lots of water)
•  Avoiding rapid weight gain or weight loss
